NewsWWF-Indonesia appreciate the arrest of sumatran tiger killerJakarta, 23 June 2010 – Finally, there is a bright light in a sumatran tiger, Shella, killing case inside the Taman Rimbo Zoo, Jambi last August 2009. On June 21 2010 - Indonesian police captured one of the perpetrators, AM (24 years old). AM has violated Act No. 5/1990 on Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation and face up 5 years in prison and 10,000 US dollars fine. Conservation officer, Didi Wurjanto, told AFP that the arrest has proven that the government is very serious in protecting Sumatran tiger population. Chairul Saleh, Species Program Coordinator of WWF-Indonesia appreciates government and police efforts to arrest Shella murderer. However, Chairul hopes that the efforts will not stop only in hunter level. "The investigation must covers the whole thing, including to reveal whether the hunter is part of an illegal trade network," said Chairul. Three perpetrators broke into Shella's cage in the zoo and skinned her inside the cage in August 2009. To date, two perpetrators have been arrested and the police is still looking for the third man. First man arrested have been sentenced for 3 years and 10 months of prison. |
