WWF-Indonesia’s Exhibition in World Town Planning Day
JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Public Works held town planning exhibition to commemora
te World Town Planning Day (WTPD) on 8th November 2008. Using “Creating Spatial Plan for All” as its theme, the exhibition endorsed declaration made by every stakeholder to initiate a nature-conscious spatial plan system with regard to Government Regulation No 26/2007.
The event was attended by representatives from foreign embassies, organizations such as Real Estate Indonesia and Ikatan Arsitektur Indonesia, and WWF-Indonesia as well.
As for WWF-Indonesia’s exhibition, “Saving Our Nature through Ecosystem-Based Land Use Planning” was a chosen theme. The theme was in accordance with Sumatran Governors’ commitment on the ecosystem-based land use plan, recommended by WWF-Indonesia and ForTRUST (NGOs and Universities coalition on Sumatra Spatial Plan). Ecosystem based land use plan was a spatial planning system emphasizing on ecosystem parameters. If applied to Sumatra, then the spatial plan must consider species distribution, key biodiversity area, important bird area, conservation area, and Sumatra’s eco-region. Classifications zone was made base on those parameters were conservation area, ecosystem network area, and development area. WWF-Indonesia hoped that the exhibition would provide sufficient information and help socialize the idea of ecosystem-based land use plan.
Some art performances and activities jazzed up the event. One of the performers, Sirkus Perkusi with their recycle material ensemble sang about the importance of saving Sumatra and why saving Sumatra mattered to urban people.

Visit Sumatra Forests in Mega Kuningan, Jakarta!
JAKARTA- Mega Kuningan Area, South Jakarta, has been decorated with Sumatra ambience by WWF Indonesia. Lots
of big banners, posters, flags, baloons with images that reminds people of the beauty and uniqueness of Sumatra Island. The corner of Plaza 9 of the area became centre of Save Sumatra campaign activity that aims to increase awareness and support to help Sumatra Island conservation efforts.
Forest fires, forest conversion to plantations and settlement, and illegal logging cause environmental destruction and pressures for the Sumatra environment and also becoming biggest threats for communities live and depend on Sumatra ecosystem.
Four Sumatra flagship species - Sumatran elephant, tiger, orangutan and rhino – are the icons of the campaign to attract interested visitors. Visitors are also provided with a lot of information on how to help saving Sumatra ecosystem such as reduce daily consumption on papers, and helping WWF Indonesia conservation activities directly.




Several celebrities and bands also contributed on the event such as Nadine Chandrawinata – the former Miss Indonesia 2005 and honorary member of WWF, Jamaican Café (famous Indonesian acapella group and honorary member of WWF), strings performance, and also a unique martial art show that combined capoiera with traditional Sumatran martial art or pencak silat.
