The Year of Tiger 2010 Campaign

2010 is the important year for tiger conservation; not only that this year is the year of tiger in lunar calendar that widely celebrated in some parts of the world, but also a high level tiger summit will be held. World leaders (including Indonesian President) will gather and commit to protect the six existing tiger sub-species in the world. At the same time, WWF-Indonesia plan to do a thorough campaign to support Sumatran tiger conservation efforts, as well as encourage our supporters and key partners in Indonesia and all over the world and also policy makers in Sumatran tiger range provinces.

Sumatran tiger is one of the surviving six tiger sub-species in this century. They are classified as critically endangered and only 400 individuals left in the wild. Sumatran tiger is the only tiger sub-species left in Indonesia. Other tiger sub-species - Javan tiger and Balinese tiger – had faced the extinction in the beginning of last century. As symbol of unique biodiversity and national pride, the existing Sumatran tigers are invaluable and irreplaceable assets for Indonesian. Therefore, they must be well protected.

The year of tiger 2010 is the best opportunity for WWF-Indonesia to:

    • Educate public on the important of protecting Sumatran tigers and how to reduce illegal tiger trade and consumptions.
    • Educate local people living in tiger habitat to reduce snare installation and prevent human-tiger conflict to reduce tiger killing.
    • Connect our various audiences and together impress policy makers to protect Sumatran tiger and its habitat.
    • Highlight tiger poaching cases and support law enforcement and maximum punishment for tiger poachers and traders.
    • Hightlight our tiger conservation program in the field – tiger patrol team, scientists, and key partners working with local people in tiger habitats.
    • Fundraising for tiger conservation
    • Facilitate Indonesian leaders to take real action and be champions for tigers
    • Expand our key partners
