Why is your support important?
Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is a subspecies of tiger that categorized as critical endangered (IUCN) and is protected in Indonesia. Sumatran tiger is the only subspecies of Asian tiger remains in Indonesia. There are only approximately 400 tigers left in Indonesia. During 1998 to 2005, international and national tiger scientists’ agencies collected data from the field and predicted that 207 individuals of sumatran tiger were dead in Sumatra during that time. This amount is equal with half of Sumatran tiger population from 1994 to 1999. During 1998 to 2001, 98 Sumatran tiger were killed. If this condition continues without any effort to stop it, Sumatran tiger will become extinct.
The main problem of the decrease population amount is poaching activities. Sumatran tiger has high value for some national or international communities. This main predator is skinned and sold for interior accessories with very high price and the bones are used for Chinese traditional medicines. Some people believe that some parts of Sumatran tiger’s body have magical peculiarity.
The killing of Sumatran tiger from its natural habitat will give negative impacts, either ecologically or economically. For example, Wild boar population will increase because of the absence of its predator and destroy community’s agriculture activities. Tigers are closely related to local cultures which make it important to protect this charismatic animal to preserve local cultures that built national characteristic. Protecting Sumatran tigers will be a positive image for Indonesian as a nation who care about its natural biodiversity as a support for sustainable development efforts.
